Intro to Relief Printing in a Studio Setting

Create artwork with all the guidance and tools you need in two evenings.

Join Creative Developer, Charles Coates, in a professional artist studio to create relief prints using the linocut process. These intimate, two-part studio sessions have a six seat limit, ensuring that each participant receives all coaching they need, along with plenty of time on the printing press. All materials provided. No experience required!

Class 1 (June 18th): Foundation of Linocut Image Design & Carving

Understand how any drawing or photograph can serve as the basis for a linocut print. Receive an introduction to the linocut process, including history and contemporary uses, then engage in the principles of successful image design and carving. Finish carving your block in the comfort of your own home, ready for printing the following week (Class 2).

In Class 1, you’ll learn how to:

  • Design a successful image for linocut printmaking

  • Transfer images to the linoblock

  • Carve your linoblock

  • Special effects with carving techniques

Class 2 (July 24): Linocut Printing and Portfolio Exchange

Return the following week with a beautifully carved block, ready to print and share! Print your block using hand pressure and with a printing press, learn how to be organized during printing, and how to sign (edition) and store your prints. Wrap-up the course with a group discussion focusing on insights and stories about each image in the portfolio. Finally, generate an art collection through a portfolio exchange with your classmates.

In Class 2, you’ll learn how to:

  • Set-up a printing station at home and stay organized (and clean!) during printing

  • Print using hand pressure and on an etching press

  • Mix colors and painterly techniques

  • Sign (edition) your prints and store in portfolio sleeve

  • Engage in portfolio exchange etiquette

  • Up to 5 of your own own prints

  • Portfolio of 5 prints with a unique workshop theme (one from each participant)
